Mirabai Chanu, who began lifting firewood as a child, is now one of India’s biggest weightlifting stars. Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, the girl from the East Imphal district of Manipur scripted history as she won the silver medal in the Women’s 49kg Weightlifting event at the Tokyo Olympics. She began winning international medals and getting recognition at a young age by competing on the international stage. Mirabai Chanu was considered a favourite in the women’s 49kg category in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Mirabai Chanu, a native of Manipur’s capital city Imphal, was born on August 8, 1994, in Imphal and is 26 years old. She won her first gold medal in a local weightlifting competition when she was 11 years old. Later, she began her international weightlifting career by competing in the World and Asian Junior Championships, where she won medals in both. She idolises Indian weightlifter Kunjarani Devi. Mirabai Chanu Early Life, Family and Background

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born to Saikhom Kriti Meitei and Saikhom Ongbi Tombi Leima. She belongs to a humble family, where her father is a government employee and her mother is a shopkeeper. Mirabai is the youngest of 5 siblings. Mirabai Chanu’s potential to be a weightlifter was realized at the age of 12 when she had lifted a bundle of firewood with ease after her brother, Saikhom Sanatomba Meitei, struggled to lift it on his head. When she was 5-year-old, Mirabai used to carry a bucket of water on her head.

In 2007, Mirabai decided to pursue weightlifting and joined Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal, where she trained under Anita Chanu. She was inspired to take up the sport by Kunjarani Devi, a 7-time World Championships Silver-medalist and national coach.

Mirabai Chanu Weightlifting Career

Chanu Mirabai’s career began with the Glasgow Commonwealth games where she won the silver medal in the 48 kg category. She also qualified for the Rio Olympics but could not finish with any successful lifts. 

In 2017 she won the Gold Medal in the women’s category weightlifting in World Weightlifting Championships at Anaheim, CA, USA. She created a record by lifting the 194 kg weight in total and 109 kg clean and jerk. She also won the first gold medal for India in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. 

In the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships, Mirabai lifted a total of 201kgs but finished 4th. 

In 2021, she won the bronze medal at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent 

At 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo Chanu won a silver medal with a total lift of 202 kg in the 49 kg section.

In April 2021, she set a new World Record with an incredible 119kg lift in clean and Jerk at the Asian Championships held in Tashkent.
